Question:
I just started a relationship with a woman and I am new to this. I have never gone beyond kissing women and I want to do more what would you recommend for safer sex?
Answer:
Just because there is no penis present doesn't mean that you are free of STI's. Women bi-sexual or lesbian still need to practice safer sex. Remember if you are in a long term monogamous relationship and you have been tested for STI's and have talked about it, safer sex for you may just be being monogamous. But if you are not exclusive there are some things to keep in mind.
Sex Toys
Make sure that you clean sex toys before use or before sharing. Use a mild soap and water or "sex toy cleanser." Do not use alcohol based cleaning products it with ruin the sex toys. You can also use condoms on dildos or vibrators and always change condoms when going from person to person.
Oral Sex
If you are worried about oral sex and STI's you should use dental dams. A dental dam is a piece of latex or non latex that you place over the vulva before performing oral. There are several brands but hot licks, glyde, hot dam. Unfortunately, dental dams can be hard to find, and they also cost some loot. However, if you have condoms (which are cheap) break out your scissors it's arts and crafts time you can make them.
1. Unroll a condom
2. Cut the tip off make a "tube"
3. Cut down the tube and roll out to a perfect rectangle
4. Tadah! Dental dam
I would recommend using not lubricated condoms just because that would taste nasty. Try using non-lubricated and/or flavored condoms. Yummm strawberry :) You can also use non-microwavable saran wrap. Make sure that it is non-microwavable because it does not have micro holes in it that STI's can pass through.
STI's
There are several STI's that can be transmitted through lesbian sex. HPV and Genital Herpes are the two that are most documented. They are transmitted through skin to skin contact and/or sharing sex toys. Hepatitis, HIV, Syphilis, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia and PID are all possible but not well documented. It's better to be safe then sorry so wrap it up, clean it off, cover it up and have fun!
